Atlantic City Convention Center
Leading the way with sustainable and energy-efficient efforts, memorable events begin at the LEED Gold and GBAC STAR-certified Atlantic City Convention Center. With a commitment to regenerative tourism, the Center ensures that every event and gathering contributes to a brighter, eco-conscious future.
LEED Gold
The Atlantic City Convention Center has earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification annually since 2019, recognizing the facility’s sustainable design, construction, and operations that enhance environmental performance and support human health. Its current LEED score is 62.
- Successfully reduced yearly energy consumption with a solar array rooftop, consisting of 13,000 panels, covering over 290,000 square feet.
- Waste intensity was reduced by 87%, improving waste diversion efforts and minimizing environmental impact.
- Carbon intensity decreased by 2.17%, helping to reduce the building’s greenhouse gas emissions.
- Anticipates saving nearly $4.4 million in electricity costs through 2029.
GBAC STAR
In 2021, the Atlantic City Convention Center was the first in New Jersey to achieve GBAC (Global Biorisk Advisory Council) STAR accreditation and reaccreditation in 2023, reflecting its commitment to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and health for employees, partners, clients, and guests.
CRDA and DCO Energy
Focusing on the Atlantic City Convention Center and Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, the $77M Energy Savings Infrastructure Program will modernize energy systems with solar and energy-efficient upgrades while supporting workforce development programs for careers in renewable energy and skilled trades.
Casino Resort Sustainability Efforts
Atlantic City’s casino resorts are leading the way in eco-friendly innovation, advancing the destination’s regenerative tourism goals through impactful green initiatives.
- Caesars Entertainment partnered with DSD Renewables to complete a 6.5 MW solar portfolio across two Atlantic City properties, generating over 8 MWh of clean energy annually and supporting a transition to renewable power.
- Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa promotes coastal conservation through the NJDEP Shell Recycling Program. By repurposing discarded seafood shells to rebuild oyster reefs in the Mullica River, Borgata helps restore marine habitats and improve water quality. The property also reduces environmental impact through water-efficient landscaping, energy reduction, and recycling over 31,500 gallons of kitchen grease annually for agricultural use.
- Citywide Commitment: Many resort dining outlets participate in the New Jersey Oyster and Clam Recycling Program, contributing to the reuse of over 100 tons of shells each year to revitalize local marine ecosystems.
Casino Resort Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Efforts
Casino resorts across Atlantic City are committed to giving back, supporting local nonprofit organizations, promoting wellness, and creating meaningful opportunities for guests to make a difference.
- Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City has donated more than $1 million annually to local charities since opening in 2018. These efforts help combat food security, support youth education, assist veterans and military services, and uplift Atlantic City’s communities. Team members actively engage in fundraising events for causes like the American Cancer Society and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
- Citywide Engagement: Casino properties provide diverse avenues for community contribution, ensuring various opportunities for guests to give back during their visit. From collaborating with local businesses in creating exclusive food and beverage items to donating monetary donations to nonprofits, Atlantic City’s casino resorts provide comprehensive economic support to the community and region.
Ocean Wind Offshore Wind Farm
- The first offshore wind project in New Jersey delivering 1,100 MW of clean, reliable energy.
- Located 15 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey and creating enough electricity to power 500,000 homes.
- Ørsted with the support of PSE&G, is proud to present New Jersey’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm, Ocean Wind.
- This wind farm will provide clean, and reliable energy, significant capital investment and will supply more than 3.2 million New Jersey homes with offshore wind power by 2035. The project will utilize the GE Haliade-X 12 MW turbine, which is the most powerful turbine on the market today.
Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm
- Located at our Wastewater Treatment Plant in Atlantic City, NJ, the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm consists of five, 380-foot turbines capable of producing a combined 7.5 megawatts of power, enough energy to power approximately 2,500 homes.
- The power produced, in conjunction with our solar energy project, is used to operate the wastewater treatment plant, with any excess energy provided to the main power grid.
- Opened in December 2005, the wind farm is the first in the state. As an eastern, urban, coastal, industrial, onshore, multi-turbine wind farm, it is one that is unique to the world.
Solar Project
- A 500-kilowatt solar electric project comprised of 2,700 solar panels helps power our Wastewater Treatment Plant in Atlantic City, NJ.
- Built in 2005, the system is estimated to produce more than 600,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 60 homes. Solar panels are located on the ground, roof tops and on a canopy over the employee parking lot at the plant.
- The power produced, in conjunction with the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm, is used to operate the wastewater treatment plant, with any excess energy provided to the main power grid.
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
- In October 2010, the first compressed natural gas station in South Jersey was built and operated by Clean Energy Fuels.
- Currently, more than 50% of the entire fleet and more than 85% of the collection vehicles run on CNG. They are in the process of converting the entire fleet from biodiesel to CNG.
Atlantic City Jitney
- In 2009, the New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition was one of 25 recipients to receive funding from the EERE Clean Cities’ Alternative Fuel and Advanced Technology Vehicles Pilot Program.
- Approximately $15 million in funding allowed the city to purchase nearly 300 compressed natural gas vehicles, including 190 Atlantic City Jitneys.
- The jitneys, minibuses run by owner-operators, have been Atlantic City’s main form of public transportation since 1915.
Marina Thermal Facility
- Operating since 2003 and expanded the facility to support the growth of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa complex and surrounding area. Marina Energy, as owner, and DCO Energy, as the Developer and Operator, developed and financed the expansion of the off-site Central Utility Plant. This energy project emphasizes the long-term vision and capabilities of the centralized heating and cooling systems that have been instituted for the Renaissance Pointe area of Atlantic City.
- The Marina Thermal Facility added 5,200 tons of chilling capacity along with the associated required system equipment to support the additional capacity such as cooling towers, pumps, and system controls.
- The project also includes the addition of new energy transfer stations for hot and cold water and metering stations to monitor the delivery of the energy products.
- The plant is designed to have the ultimate capacity of 25,000 tons of cooling, 350,000BTU of high temperature hot water production, and 8 MW of emergency power.
